Solar Collectors Covering 0.3 percent of the Sahara Could Power all of Europe

Solar power is an exciting source of renewable energy, but has so far mostly been used to power little things like homescars and small villages. But what if solar energy was used on a scale that would power the majority of Europe? The Desertec Foundation, a Jordanian and German company are hoping to secure financing for a radically ambitious project to harness solar energy in the world’s most barren, sun-drenched expanse, the Sahara Desert. Desertec claims that if only 0.3 percent of the expanse of the Sahara was covered with solar panels, it would power the entire European continent. If up to 1 percent of the desert were covered, it could power the entire world.

Desertec hopes to construct decentralized solar fields across different parts of Northern Africa within the next 10 to 15 years. They predict that these installations will generate about 100 gigawatts of power, which would be sent over high-voltage DC lines buried under the Mediterranean and power about 15 percent of Europe. Their plans get even more ambitious from there. The company hopes to also set up a series of desalinization plants in the area as a source of clean water and for irrigation in the region in hopes of reclaiming portions of the desert. They even have a long-range plan that adds wind farms to the mix.

Fast Company magazine has published their new list of the 100 most creative people in business. Some folks that regularly make it into our news also made the list, including Kaws, Pharrell Williams, Damien Hirst. As much as we have always liked the work of Kaws, it still impresses us over and over again of how widely known and respected the artist has become in recent years. It’s very impressive and well deserved.

Check out the whole list

Bastard Skate shop- Milan

When you think it has all been done, it is always great to be proofed wrong. Studiometricotransformed an old theater into skate heaven – the Bastard Store.

“Needing to fully integrate the administrative and design departments, along with a flagship store, studiometrico incorporated the needs of all aspects of the company into a single space.

Built in 1940, the Cinema Istria had previously held a car dealership, but with this project it became fully re-concieved. The most glorious aspect of the design is a skate bowl, suspended above all the working departments.”

Rick Ross fakin’

Filed under: Accessories,clothing,Entertainment,Music,random ish — hamiltonandtroup @ 10:41 pm

Ok so i haven’t really been posting up to date info on the formiddable train wreck that is Rick Ross (aka Officer Ricky). All this non sense between him and 50 cent is both annoying and not worth my time, but this situation is definitely worth a post. Turns out Rick Ross not only fronted as being a drug lord from the streets of miami (turned out to be a PO officer instead) but on his latest cover for XXL Magazine he is rocking FAKE Louis Vuitton Shades. Don’t know about you but i feel that it speaks to his career in a nut shell. Here is the Letter written to XXL from LV’s Malletier, Michael Pantalony.

Dear Editor:

We were dismayed to see the cover of the May 2009 issue of XXL Magazine, which features a photo of Rick Ross wearing a pair of sunglasses prominently featuring counterfeit Louis Vuitton trademarks. Because the photo has generated considerable confusion among your readers and Louis Vuitton customers among others, we feel it is important to clarify several points.

The first is that the sunglasses Mr. Ross is wearing were not made by Louis Vuitton, and in fact, are counterfeit. Louis Vuitton did not grant permission to Mr. Ross or to whoever did make the sunglasses to use our trademarks. The second is that no affiliation, sponsorship or association exists between Rick Ross or XXL and Louis Vuitton. The third is that counterfeiting is illegal.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to correct the confusion.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Pantalony, Esq.

The new issue of bi-annual art magazine TAR has been released and even without looking inside the issue already starts strong. Damien Hirst created the cover art, which features super model Kate Moss. Further features include pieces on Spike Jonze, Phillippe Stark, Ryan McGinley and others. You can purchase the new issue now at colette.

Personally, I feel Damien Hirst is on a level of his own. I don’t even understand where he gets his ideas and/or inspirations from but I’m trying to have some of his pieces in my crib once i get settled in!

The Governator talks Marijuana Legalization

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday it’s time for California to study whether to legalize and tax marijuana for recreational use, though he’s not yet advocating for such a change.

The governor was asked about a recent Field Poll showing that 56 percent of registered voters support legalizing and taxing marijuana to raise revenues for cash-strapped California. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, has proposed legislation that would legalize the drug for recreational use, rather than just medical purposes.

“Well, I think it’s not time for that, but I think it’s time for a debate,” Schwarzenegger said. “I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues, I’m always for an open debate on it. And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what effect did it have on those countries?”

He said his native Austria is revisiting some of its marijuana laws, for instance. The Austrian Parliament last year authorized cultivation of medical marijuana.

“It could very well be that everyone is happy with that decision and then we could move to that,” Schwarzenegger said of other nations’ legalization policies. “If not, we shouldn’t do it. But just because of raising revenues … we have to be careful not to make mistakes at the same time.Schwarzenegger previously has shown a casual attitude toward marijuana. He was filmed smoking a joint in the 1977 film, “Pumping Iron.” And he told the British version of GQ in 2007, “That is not a drug. It’s a leaf.” Spokesman Aaron McLear downplayed the governor’s comment as a joke at the time.

California alone could not easily legalize pot, given that it remains a federally regulated substance. Ammiano said in March he is hoping President Barack Obama would allow California to move toward legalization.

Schwarzenegger appeared Tuesday at a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection facility in Davis to promote “Wildfire Awareness Week.”
